10 NEGOTIATION TIPS YOU WISH YOU KNEW EARLIER

As business owners and even career people, we have at one point in time needed to negotiate. You are either negotiating your next salary or payment for your services. The worst things that can happen when negotiating is when you are not able to negotiate effectively or even speak up to support your stance.

How do you then negotiate the way you ought to and stop missing out on opportunities?


1. Do your research: Before you go into any negotiation, make sure you have done your research. Know the organisation and have an idea of how much they can afford and why they need your services. Make sure you are well-informed.

2. Ask for what you want: Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. Don’t be intimidated. Ask for what you want nicely and firmly.

3. Focus on the value you are offering: What value are you bringing to the table and whys house the person at the other end of the table care? These are some of the things you need to highlight when negotiating.

4. Listen: Always listen to the other person and find out what their pain points are.

5. Be firm but nice: Be firm about what you want and ask for it in a nice and professional way so you don’t come off as rude. 

6. Aim high: Don’t be afraid to aim high so that even if the other party wants to negotiate, they get to offer you what you initially expected and can’t go below. For instance, if you are looking towards getting N100,000-N120,000 for a job, don’t be afraid to ask for N120,000 because of negotiation purposes and you might just get it or the N100,000 which is what you can’t go below.

7. Be willing to walk away: Yes. Always have options so you don’t get stuck in a deal that won’t be mutually beneficial.
